Surviving Manic Depression or Eczema Free for Life

Surviving Manic Depression: A Manual on Bipolar Disorder for Patients, Families and Providers

Author: E Fuller Torrey

Surviving Manic Depression is the most comprehensive, up-to-date book on the disorder that affects more than two million people in the United States alone. Based on the latest research, it provides detailed coverage of every aspect of the disorder. All aspects of the disease are addressed: symptoms, with many direct descriptions from patients themselves, risk factors, onset and cause, medications (including drugs still in the testing stage), causes, psychotherapy, and rehabilitation and how the disease affects children and adolescents. Here too are discussions of special problems related to manic-depressive disorder, including alcohol and drug abuse, violent behavior, medication noncompliance, suicide, sex, AIDS, and confidentiality. Surviving Manic Depression also includes special features such as a listing of selected websites, videotapes, and other resources.

Publishers Weekly

A lucid, thorough guide to every aspect of living with bipolar disorder, Surviving Manic Depression: A Manual on Bipolar Disorder for Patients, Families and Providers covers symptoms, treatment and advocacy. E. Fuller Torrey (Surviving Schizophrenia), psychiatry professor and Treatment Advocacy Center president, and psychiatry instructor Michael B. Knable explain what mania and depression feel like from the inside, the causes and risk factors, the range of possible medications and treatments, and 10 special problems for manic depressives like alcohol abuse and medical noncompliance. There's also a section on bipolar disorder in children and a list of frequently asked questions. This is a valuable resource for anyone touched by the illness. Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.

Library Journal

Torrey, one of the world's leading authorities on schizophrenia and an advocate for the care of the severely mentally ill, here does for manic depression what he has done for schizophrenia in successive editions of this book's companion volume, Surviving Schizophrenia (Quill, 2001) that is, he provides a comprehensive treatise on the condition's etiology, symptoms, and treatment. Moreover, Torrey and Knable (psychiatry, George Washington Univ. Hosp.) manage to convey the complexities of the subject without overwhelming or confusing the lay reader. The authors are clearly mainstream in their view of manic depression as an organic brain disease requiring medication to control symptoms. They thoroughly cover various medications, their side effects, and suggestions for maintaining compliance and controlling side effects. Of particular interest are the extensive appendixes listing and describing books, web sites, videos, and other resources on bipolar disorder. Unlike most such lists, this one describes and rates the material listed. By far the best general book available on the subject, this is highly recommended for all public and academic libraries. Mary Ann Hughes, Neill P.L., Pullman, WA Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.

Booknews

The term bipolar disorder was an unfortunate choice, say the researchers with the Stanley Foundation, but it did distinguish between people who suffer simple depression from those who also undergo manic episodes; they substitute the term manic depression. In non-technical language, they describe its incidence; what it looks like from the inside and the outside; risk factors; onset, course, and outcome; causes; medications; nonmedical aspects of treatment; and other topics. Eczema-Free for Life

Author: Adnan Nasir

Rid yourself of eczema forever! Based on new research, this book has everything the millions of eczema sufferers need to know to free themselves from unbearable itching and unsightly rashes.

Eczema–Free For Life contains the latest medical information about the cause, symptoms, and treatments of eczema and is written both for adults with eczema and the parents of children with eczema. In addition to the most recent medical research, Dr. Nasir offers guidance for home care and ways to cope with the psychological impact of the disorder. None of the popular books about eczema currently on the market is written by a practicing dermatologist and none is based on up–to–date science. New research has conclusively demonstrated that eczema is the result of the abnormal development of some twenty genes responsible for controlling how the skin interacts with the environment. When the skin's barrier function fails, irritants pass through to underlying tissue and trigger the itchy rash that characterizes eczema. Dr. Nasir will explain new and more powerful treatments that are being developed based on these new discoveries as well as point out reliable holistic remedies that have worked for centuries.

Chakra Meditation: Discover Energy, Creativity, Focus, Love, Communication, Wisdom, and Spirit

Author: Swami Saradananda

Chakras are a series of seven energy centers running from the base of the spine to the top of the head. Each one operates as a hub for the vital energy that flows through the human body, and is important to certain aspects of personal well-being, such as remaining clam, sexual energy, and an open mind. This comprehensive guide explains the seven major chakras in-depth, as well as the often overlooked minor chakras associated with them. Each beautifully illustrated chapter looks at different kinds of meditation.  Techniques covered include walking meditations and techniques to help tune in to these centers: emotion-based visualizations, a rose meditation, and even a singing meditation and a Sufi whirling exercise.

The S Factor or The Promise of Energy Psychology

The S Factor: Strip Workouts for Every Woman

Author: Sheila Kelley

Hipper than Taebo, sexier than Pilates, The S Factor--stripping--is the hottest new fitness trend. Created by actress Sheila Kelley (LA Law, Sisters, and a host of film and Broadway roles), S-Factor classes are wildly popular and generating an avalanche of attention from Extra, Entertainment Tonight, The Los Angeles Times, Allure, Us magazine, Fox News, and CBS's 48 Hours, which proclaimed: "Women don't even know they're working out until two months later when they say, 'I've never had a better body in my life. I'm strong, I'm limber, I feel great.'" Sheila even convinced Barbara Walters to try a pole dance on The View.

No wonder. Combining yoga, dance, and erotic movements, The S Factor is a program that tones muscle, firms the body, increases flexibility, promotes weight loss, and gives you a few new tricks for the bedroom. Illustrated in hundreds of photographs that show step by step how each move is done, the exercises are sensual yet demanding, requiring a balance of strength and finesse. There are slow, rounded warm-ups, the Spine Circles and Hip Circles. Strenuous motions, like the Rocking Cat-Cow. Peels and rolls, grinds, pounces, arches. And pole work, from the Firefly to Descending Angel.

Something else happens, too: These exercises and routines boost self-esteem and give women a new way to think about their bodies. Stripping is a liberating act, out of which comes a new look, new body, new confidence, new you.

Library Journal

Forget Gypsy Rose Lee! Modern strippers-otherwise known as pole dancers and lap dancers-get up close and personal with their audiences. Researching a film role, actress Kelley got to know these dancers and learned their routines. Impressed with both the physical improvement and the emotional high they inspired, she began teaching these routines to her friends and ultimately opened an exercise salon. Her book breaks down the basic moves, many of which are similar to yoga and/or ballet, then puts them together in a variety of routines. She compares the workout to the fertility dances of early matriarchal societies, citing the body awareness and feeling of empowerment that result. The suggested music could have included a few more bands familiar to those of us who aren't Gen-Xers, but the workouts themselves are good exercise and will be more fun for many women than a more traditional workout. The Promise of Energy Psychology: Revolutionary Tools for Dramatic Personal Change

Author: David Feinstein

This groundbreaking book explains how to tap into your body's energy not only to change your health, but to change your behaviors and thought patterns as well.

Your body is comprised of energy pathways and energy centers that are in constant motion, a dynamic interplay with other energies and with your cells, organs, immune system, mood, and thoughts. If you can shift these energies, you can influence your physical health, your emotional patterns, and your state of mind.

The Healing Power of Energy Psychology gives simple step-by-step instructions that will help you to:

- overcome fear, guilt, shame, jealousy, or anger
- change unwanted habits and behaviors
- enhance your ability to love, succeed, and enjoy life

The energy approach presented in this book can help bring about significant change in your life. With this strategy, stubborn phobias often fade in minutes; the lifelong effects of an early trauma can frequently be reduced or completely eliminated; uncontrollable anger can rapidly become manageable; even elusive physical problems may respond where other treatments have failed. The Healing Power of Energy Psychology is an amazing tool that puts the ability to effect change directly into your hands, and finally gives you control over your fears, pain, and destructive behaviors.

Publishers Weekly

The authors readily admit their bold claims-"Your emotional health, your success in the world, and your level of joy can all be dramatically enhanced by shifting the energies that regulate them"-are not backed by empirical research. Nonetheless, Feinstein, a clinical psychologist and national director of the Energy Medicine Institute; his wife, Eden, a renowned energy healer (and Feinstein's coauthor on Energy Medicine); along with Craig, founder of Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), assert that phobias and anxieties often fade in minutes, trauma might be alleviated in a few sessions, anger can be decreased, depression may be managed without medication, and young children can be given an achievement boost by following their techniques. The theory is that "stimulating energy points on the skin, paired with specified mental activities, can instantly shift your brain's electrochemistry." Despite the wide use of acupuncture in alternative Western medicine, not much is known about the body's energies and how that energy can be used in healing. The authors say this book can be approached with a "show-me" attitude. Indeed, Feinstein, Eden and Craig will have to "show" empirical evidence before their method can be supported by the mental health field. (Nov.) Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.

Library Journal

Clinical psychologist Feinstein and his team of practitioners here demonstrate how the mind and body work together to form emotional responses-and how maladaptive reactions to situations can be corrected by sending electrochemical signals directly to the brain. The authors base their program on applied kinesiology, a modern form of the ancient Eastern healing arts, which has been used to treat posttraumatic stress in Kosovo as well as habits, addictions, and phobias around the world. Patients are taught to interrupt their conditioned response to situations through tapping on specific points of the skin and mentally rehearsing new responses. While this unconventional method may raise a few eyebrows, the procedures and theory are well explained, and results are documented. Recommended for all libraries. Publishers Weekly

Can thinking and eating like a thin person be learned, similar to learning to drive or use a computer? Beck (Cognitive Therapy for Challenging Problems) contends so, based on decades of work with patients who have lost pounds and maintained weight through Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). Beck's six-week program adapts CBT, a therapeutic system developed by Beck's father, Aaron, in the 1960s, to specific challenges faced by yo-yo dieters, including negative thinking, bargaining, emotional eating, bingeing, and eating out. Beck counsels readers day-by-day, introducing new elements (creating advantage response cards, choosing a diet, enlisting a diet coach, making a weight-loss graph) progressively and offering tools to help readers stay focused (writing exercises, to-do lists, ways to counter negative thoughts). There are no eating plans, calorie counts, recipes or exercises; according to Beck, any healthy diet will work if readers learn to think differently about eating and food. Beck's book is like an extended therapy session with a diet coach. (Apr.)

Why Can't I Stop Eating?: Recognizing, Understanding and Overcoming Food Addiction

Author: Debbie Danowski

Why can't I stop eating? If, like millions of others, you often ask yourself this question, you may be addicted to food. The food you eat may be precisely what makes you crave more . . . and more. This straight-talking book puts the widespread problem of food addiction into clear perspective and points the way to a life free of the obsession with food. Debbie Danowski, whose food addiction nearly ruined her life, and Peter Lazaro combine forces to give readers a full understanding of this debilitating condition: its sources, patterns, consequences, and physiological underpinnings. Unlike fad diets and drugs with their side effects, hidden costs, and infamous failure rates, the program outlined in this book goes to the root cause of chronic overeating and puts the tools for a lifelong cure into the hands of anyone willing to accept responsibility for a healthy, happy future.

Library Journal

As more and more Americans discover that crash diets and diet pills don't work, they are turning to self-help books that stress taking responsibility for one's weight and eating more healthily. Why Can't I Stop Eating? focuses on understanding how addictive substances, such as carbohydrates, sugar, and caffeine, react in the body. Danowski and Lazaro, a recovering food addict and a medical director of three addictions hospitals, respectively, believe that carbohydrate addiction is the main reason why 50 percent of Americans are overweight. The authors cite research illustrating physiological reasons for food cravings (especially carbohydrates) and downplaying the effectiveness of weight-loss drugs like Fen/Phen. They also provide exercises that clarify which foods trigger overeating and diets that emphasize low carbohydrate intake. Jeffrey and Norean Wilbert, a food therapist and a registered nurse, respectively, suggest that "fattitudes"--self-defeating behavior that causes overeating--are the main obstacles to maintaining ideal weight and present helpful exercises to identify them. This book's philosophy is that even people genetically prone to obesity have emotional (perhaps unconscious) reasons to be overweight. Because both of these titles are clearly written and will appeal to general readers, they are recommended for larger public libraries.--LeAnna DeAngelo, Springfield, MI Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.

Internet Book Watch

In Why Can't I Stop Eating? , Debbie Danowski and Doctor Pedro Lazaro effectively collaborate to explain and examine the problem of food addiction which is so commonplace in society today. They reveal the sources, patterns, consequences, and physiological underpinnings of food addiction. The offer a practical program going to the root cause of chronic overeating. The reader is provided with the tools necessary for a lifelong cure of this pervasive disorder. Why Can't I Stop Eating? is enthusiastically recommended for anyone suffering from compulsive food addiction.

The Detox Strategy: Vibrant Health in 5 Easy Steps

Author: Brenda Watson

Regardless of where and how you live, your body is harboring dozens if not hundreds of toxins that could be sabotaging your health. Low on energy? Dealing with chronic illness? Having trouble losing weight? Toxins might be to blame. From your mattress to your toothpaste to your nonstick pans to the food you eat and the (bottled) water you drink -- every day your body is bombarded with chemicals that can alter the way your body works, affecting its natural processes and capacity to heal and maintain vibrancy. Even though we are built to handle foreign substances effectively, our liver and other organs simply cannot cope with today's glut of toxins, many of which are too foreign and toxic for our bodies to manage well. This ultimately causes us to age prematurely, to gain weight, and to become more prone to disease.

The Detox Strategy by Brenda Watson, C.N.C., who is the bestselling author of The Fiber35 Diet: Nature's Weight Loss Secret, a PBS mainstay, and an expert on internal cleansing and detoxification, introduces us to the revolutionary RENEW program (Reduce, Eliminate, Nourish, Energize, Wellness), which aids in reversing the effects of aging and rejuvenating the body and mind. The program offers a holistic approach to protecting and nurturing your body's innate purification physiology. The result is a higher quality of life, more energy, longevity.

The Detox Strategy reveals:

  • The truth about where toxins come from and how they affect our bodies
  • How toxins can accelerate the aging process by causing poor health and chronic disease
  • How to determine your individual level of toxic exposure and the steps you can take to reduce it
  • Why efforts to cleanse and detoxify the body are an essential part of enhancing one's energy and vitality and preserving overall health
  • How maintaining a cleaner, more vibrant body can affect longevity

The Detox Strategy includes a detailed herbal supplement plan for gently flushing out harmful toxins -- including heavy metals like lead and mercury -- plus delicious original recipes for nourishing meals that further promote detoxification. The Detox Strategy teaches cleansing concepts that are researched and clinically proven, and it provides you with the necessary tools to live in a purer and more energized body. Brenda Watson wants you to know the truth about your body and to help you live a longer and healthier life. With this easy-to-follow program you can jump-start your system and get on a path to optimum wellness. Are you ready?

Publishers Weekly

Commonly used in ancient and traditional societies, herbal cleansing remains central to health care in Asian, Indian and Native American cultures. In her five-part RENEW program, written with physician Smith, nutritional consultant Watson (The Fiber35 Diet) applies her winning style, demonstrated in her PBS specials, to educate readers about pervasive toxins that cause alarming rates of illness and death. With facts, studies and statistics, Watson contends that consumers cannot rely on regulating agencies to protect them (for example, in 1972 the U.S. banned the carcinogen DDT, but it is still produced here, exported to other countries and then imported back in DDT-treated foods grown there). The program, running from six weeks for basic and advanced cleanses to 14 weeks with optional liver and heavy-metal cleanses, shows readers how to reduce exposure; eliminate toxins from their bodies; and support their natural detox capacity with herbal supplements, diet, exercise and such treatments as colonics and therapeutic baths. Watson includes a few recipes, sample menus and a schedule for periodic cleanses. The weight of toxic exposure from unavoidable sources (pesticides, dental work, processed foods, home furnishings, clothing, playground equipment and fluorescent lighting, among many others) can seem overwhelming, but Watson's balanced approach provides readers with effective ways to gradually lessen the load. Hunger Free Forever: The New Science of Appetite Control

Millions have spent years searching for the perfect diet, one that enables them to lose weight without going hungry, and now they can finally find it — and make it work for life — in Hunger Free Forever.

This blockbuster book gives readers the secret to feeling full while staying fit, revealing for the first time ever the newly discovered PG X® "super fiber." Simply by taking PG X before or during a meal, readers can painlessly shed pounds without ever feeling starved, because PGX creates and maintains a satisfying sense of fullness. Based on sound clinical research, the Hunger Free program restores normal appetite regulation, eliminating the trap of yo-yo dieting. With plenty of easy-to-prepare recipes, food plans, and valuable information, Hunger Free Forever teaches readers how to eliminate food cravings and never feel deprived.

By retraining appetite and metabolism, readers will gain the power they need to change their unhealthy relationships with food forever.

Susan B. Hagloch - Library Journal

Lose weight without going hungry? We all thought it was impossible, until we began to explore the possibility of using fiber-rich foods to fill us up without packing on the calories. InovoBiologic Inc. used studies conducted at the University of Toronto to produce PolyGlycopleX™ (PGX), a water-soluble "super fiber" that absorbs 600 times its weight in water. Lyon is one of the doctors who developed the product, and together with Murray (The Condensed Encyclopedia of Healing Foods), he here presents a weight-loss plan that involves ingesting PGX in tandem with foods that raise the metabolic rate and improve the body's ability to utilize its own insulin, a process called thermogenesis. The plan also includes menus and recipes. Though following the diet might induce weight loss, the added fiber may not deter a determined nosher. Also, PGX will create severe blockage unless the user is careful to drink sufficient fluid. Not a necessary purchase, but there could be demand around the holidays. Rice Diet Cookbook or Food Mood Solution

Rice Diet Cookbook: 150 Easy, Everyday Recipes and Inspirational Success Stories from the Rice Diet Program Community

Author: Kitty Gurkin Rosati

Based on the New York Times bestselling Rice Diet Solution.

After the success of The Rice Diet Solution, the Rice Diet Program's message boards were bombarded with pleas and suggestions for more Rice Dietfriendly recipes. The result is this collection of healthy whole-food dishes, which includes personal favorites from the Rice Diet kitchen as well as from successful dieters who want to share their weight-loss tips with everyone who intends to lose weight and live a healthier life.

Includes such recipes as:
Ґ Basil-Mint Quinoa Salad
Ґ Roasted Red Pepper Lettuce Wrap
Ґ Zesty Sweet Potato Chips
Ґ Pan-Seared Sea Scallops
Ґ Chocolate-Banana Cream Custard
Ґ Toasted Ginger Papaya

And many more!

Claire Schaper - Library Journal

This cookbook is filled to the brim with healthy recipes that adhere to the rice diet's relatively strict dietary rules established in 1939. After an outline of the program (each consecutive week allows more varied ingredients à la the South Beach diet and other diets), readers advance to the recipes, which are organized into categories and include sweet anecdotes about their evolution, as they were contributed by dieters, rice diet dietitians, and cooks. A first glance at many of the main dishes may leave the impression that the meals are bland and a bit complicated for their short ingredient list. Upon closer inspection, though, there are tasty alternatives to basic American meals, as well as more "exotic" foods. The rice diet aims to combat not only weight gain but also obesity, heart disease, and other preventable ailments. Weight loss may be only a pleasant side effect of following this practical, heart-healthy plan. Recommended for public libraries and any special or academic libraries with a nutrition curriculum or section.

Food-Mood Solution: All-Natural Ways to Banish Anxiety, Depression, Anger, Stress, Overeating, and Alcohol and Drug Problems--and Feel Good Again

Author: Jack Challem

Renowned nutrition expert Jack Challem isolates the nutritional triggers of bad moods, providing solutions that will help you stabilize your moods, gain energy, sleep better, handle stress, and be more focused. He lays out a clear-cut, four-step plan for feeding the brain the right nutrition, presenting advice on choosing the right foods and supplements as well as improving lifestyle habits to help regulate mood swings.

Publishers Weekly

Best known as the "Nutrition Reporter" for consumer health publications (Alternative Medicine; Body & Soul; etc.), Challem (The Inflammation Syndrome) describes a familiar scenario: rising levels of anger, impatience, frustration, fatigue and anxiety due to minor daily irritations. Citing studies of increased violence traced to mood disorders, Challem contends that basic but highly specific diet and lifestyle modifications can lower stress levels and radically improve behavior and health. While the effects of poor nutrition on health take years to manifest, he says, such effects on mood are readily apparent, and he urges readers to notice how certain foods and beverages lead to headaches, fatigue, poor sleep, depression, compulsive behavior, panic attacks, bipolar disorder and other increasingly common conditions. His plan targets neuronutrients (vitamins and minerals needed to make critical brain chemicals) and nutrisocial factors (family, workload, environment, advertising, etc.) to boost mood. After taking a few quizzes, readers will be guided through a four-part program: supplements, diet, exercise and lifestyle. While the information is not entirely new, Challem does solidly address the hardest part of his equation-and that's the lifestyle change itself. (Mar.) Copyright 2007 Reed Business Information.

Sarah Boslaugh - Library Journal

It is obvious that what we eat may affect our moods and mental functioning—anyone who gets cranky when hungry or sleepy after a big meal has experienced this connection firsthand. However, specific recommendations, such as using B vitamins to treat depression or omega-3 fish oils to treat adult attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, are more questionable. This book, for which health reporter Challem has drawn on 30 years of nutrition research, is an uncomfortable combination of truisms and general advice (e.g., modern life is stressful, physical activity can improve your mood) that often recommends using nutritional supplements to treat specific disorders. Although the general advice may be useful, it is available elsewhere; the specific advice may be dangerous if it replaces consultation with a medical or psychiatric professional. Nonetheless, some people want this kind of information, so the volume may be relevant to public libraries collecting popular health books of uncertain scientific credibility.

Activity Schedules for Children with Autism or A Caregivers Guide to Alzheimers Disease

Activity Schedules for Children with Autism: Teaching Independent Behavior

Author: Lynn E McClannahan

Activity schedules--simple, yet revolutionary teaching tools--enable children with autism to accomplish activities with greatly reduced adult supervision.

An activity schedule is a set of pictures or words that cues a child to engage in a sequence of activities. When activity schedules are mastered, children are more self-directed and purposeful in their home, school, and leisure activities--doing puzzles, interacting with classmates, and preparing food with minimal assistance from adults. In this book, parents and professionals will find detailed instructions and examples to help them:

  • Assess a child's readiness to use activity schedules
  • Prepare a first photographic activity schedule
  • Understand how to use graduated guidance as a teaching tool
  • Monitor progress
  • Introduce new elements such as choice and use of timers
  • Expand social skills
  • Progress to written schedules

Library Journal

Aarons and Gittens are London speech therapists who have taught autistic children for 25 years. Their book is a thorough introduction to autism, covering diagnosis, assessments, history, prognosis, and methods of education. Still, while the background and history are helpful, the intended readership is British. Sections on educational alternatives, British sign language, British education acts, and therapy options in Britain will be of little use to U.S. readers, who need immediate, close-at-hand help. Temple Grandin's Thinking in Pictures (LJ 1/96) and Emergence might be better choices. The McClannahan/Krantz book covers one method of helping autistic children learn: using activity schedules. These schedules teach autistic youngsters to follow words, pictures, or other nonverbal prompts to complete all varieties of tasks. Autistic children, often seen as antisocial, can benefit from a self-motivated plan to complete jobs at home, enjoy leisure time, or simply perform the daily activities of dressing and preparing for school. The book details how to set up activities, relate prompts to action, and follow through so that autistic children can become independent of verbal commands that parents or teachers might give. Illustrated with charts, photos of children, and examples of visual prompts; for larger public libraries.--Linda Beck, Indian Valley P.L., Telford, PA Copyright 1999 Cahners Business Information.

Dressing the Man or The pH Miracle

Dressing the Man: Mastering the Art of Permanent Fashion

Author: Alan J Flusser

Dressing the Man is the definitive guide to what men need to know in order to dress well and look stylish without becoming fashion victims.

Alan Flusser's name is synonymous with taste and style. With his new book, he combines his encyclopedic knowledge of men's clothes with his signature wit and elegance to address the fundamental paradox of modern men's fashion: Why, after men today have spent more money on clothes than in any other period of history, are there fewer well-dressed men than at any time ever before?

According to Flusser, dressing well is not all that difficult, the real challenge lies in being able to acquire the right personalized instruction. Dressing well pivots on two pillars -- proportion and color. Flusser believes that "Permanent Fashionability," both his promise and goal for the reader, starts by being accountable to a personal set of physical trademarks and not to any kind of random, seasonally served-up collection of fashion flashes.

Unlike fashion, which is obliged to change each season, the face's shape, the neck's height, the shoulder's width, the arm's length, the torso's structure, and the foot's size remain fairly constant over time. Once a man learns how to adapt the fundamentals of permanent fashion to his physique and complexion, he's halfway home.

Taking the reader through each major clothing classification step-by-step, this user-friendly guide helps you apply your own specifics to a series of dressing options, from business casual and formalwear to pattern-on-pattern coordination, or how to choose the most flattering clothing silhouette for your body type and shirt collar for your face.

A man'sphysical traits represent his individual road map, and the quickest route toward forging an enduring style of dress is through exposure to the legendary practitioners of this rare masculine art. Flusser has assembled the largest andmost diverse collection of stylishly mantled men ever found in one book. Many never-before-seen vintage photographs from the era of Cary Grant, Tyrone Power, and Fred Astaire are employed to help illustrate the range and diversity of authentic men's fashion. Dressing the Man's sheer magnitude of options will enable the reader to expand both the grammar and verbiage of his permanent-fashion vocabulary.

For those men hoping to find sartorial fulfillment somewhere down the road, tethering their journey to the mind-set of permanent fashion will deliver them earlier rather than later in life.

Richard Nalley - Forbes

Author and haberdasher Alan Flusser's Dressing the Man is an authoritative guide to the modern man's wardrobe, a surprisingly newsworthy subject thanks to the recent rise and fall of Silicon Valley's influence, and the cor-responding shifts at many companies from business wear to "business casual" and back again. Flusser leads off with the fundamentals, color and proportion, and builds all other associations from there. "Once you learn which colors enhance your complexion and why specific proportions flatter your physique," he writes, "you are halfway home." But Flusser is just warming up: The encyclopedic book continues with chapter-by-chapter discussions of everything a man might put on his body. With each description of socks, shoes, dress shirts and pocket squares, Flusser returns to his main point: that a man's clothes should harmonize with the tones of his skin and hair and with his physique. Style, like anything else a man wants to improve--his golf game, his public speaking, or his appreciation of fine wines--is a talent that can be learned.

Publishers Weekly

During the past 25 years, men have spent more money on clothing for themselves than in any other period of modern history, says Alan Flusser (Style and the Man). The time has "never been more propitious for the emergence of a standing army of well-heeled swells," he believes, and in Dressing the Man: Mastering the Art of Permanent Fashion, he takes readers on a tour of men's clothing that he attests will never go out of style. Flusser carefully explains how to mix patterns, what to look for when trying on clothes in the fitting room, what kind of jacket to wear with a straight-point collar, the history of the monk-strap shoe, the correct position for a bow tie and what "business casual" really means. Heavily illustrated with photographs of dapper dans from Humphrey Bogart to the Duke of Windsor and drawings depicting neckwear, suit jackets, coat sleeves and trouser creases, this is a superb reference for any man.
